Inspiration Week: Contests, Awards, and Photo Workflow

This is the last one for Inspiration Week. I’m still trying to decide what next week will be. Anyway, I HAD to touch on awards and contests that inspire me every single time I look!

Check out this from National Geographic.

http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photo-of-the-day/?source=NavPhoPOD How incredible is this?!  One day, I will complete one of my bucket list items which is to attend a Nat Geo workshop – preferably in the Galapagos. But really, if you want to pay for my workshop, I’ll go anywhere. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

There are so many contests and awards out there. I love looking at them and all of the entries and figuring out where I am and what I can improve on. It’s all about growth right!?

One thing I’ve been working on and improving is my workflow. I now can create and present all of my contracts on my iPad! As well as take credit cards. Not even sure what we did before technology!  I’ve been working on getting this business stuff down. Quick Books is definitely helping and I’m sure my CPA will appreciate it come tax time. The business side isn’t exactly inspiring, but it does keep things running more smoothly so I have time to go out and shoot what DOES inspire me!  If you haven’t perfected your business, please, take my advice and do it IMMEDIATELY.  Figure out how you want things organized and your marketing. The sooner you do that the better!  2013 will start out with my new marketing and packaging, (same logo, new branding), new pricing, and will continue my business workflow.

RC Bell Photography new branding and packaging – (Bonus! – yeah, that’s a lotto ticket specific for RC Bell Photography)

Have a wonderful weekend!

Inspiration Week: Maternity, Newborns, Families, Couples

I briefly touched on inspiring weddings and the gorgeous wedding blogs that I follow. But I’d say the majority of clients aren’t getting married. The photography market is flooded with newborn photographers. That is an entire area that has taken such a fun route – showcasing your gorgeous newborn in a work of art. My favorite has to be Baby As Art.  But my latest addiction is lifestyle photography.

There are so many moments in regular ordinary life during your pregnancy, the first few days with your newborn, as a couple and as a family that are worth capturing on camera.  Below is my little girl’s sweaty head while she does homework.

While there are so many beautiful photos to drool over, isn’t it finding your own style? I am completely guilty of looking at a photo and thinking how I would have edited it differently. Yes, I confessed. But that’s what makes us all unique.  There is not a single photo out there that duplicates my work. I once got incredibly irritated because I conjured up a pose on the spur of the moment at a wedding. I was distraught that that pose was then used by a ton of other photographers. I had to remind myself that poses are not copyrighted. That while I can pout in the corner that “that’s mine!” all photographers are doing the same thing.  It’s finding your style, your small flare of unique touch to a photo that makes it different.

I’ve gotten off track. Personally I find that the inspiring part comes from the client. I had this one family for a maternity shoot. The two precious little boys wanted to play. At first I’d wanted them to pose, but little boys really are something to watch as they play. So we just incorporated that into the photo of the dad and pregnant mom.

I suppose it’s the personality of each subject that is the challenge of photography and therefore is the inspiration of each shoot.

And now, some of my girl riding her bike. Because the world cannot see enough photos of my girl!

INSPIRATION Week: Personal Inspiration

Today is what inspires ME and YOU!  I am sure you’ve heard all the normal – my kids, my husband, my pets, God, a beautiful flower, etc. And yes, all of those are true and do inspire me. My daughter’s faces especially inspire me because I’m CONVINCED they are impossible to capture on camera, but I can keep on trying!

So what about the other inspiration you see every day?   The biggest inspiration for a photographer is light! I’m sure you’re tired of hearing me talk about lighting but that is the key element in photography! Ok, so this morning, I was driving on I-78 (which I’m convinced is the second worst interstate next to I-5). The sun was up but there was a gorgeous haze – hopefully not California haze. The mountains were silhouetted with a little bit of shine. It.was.STUNNING.  I immediately wished that I had my camera and that I wasn’t driving. (Sidenote: when driving behind me, be prepared to stop. Do NOT ride my tail. I stop unexpectedly for photos).

My other inspiration is people.   I am currently taking classes at a local college and the students are always a blast to watch.  But the inspiration comes from how each person carries his or herself. I love seeing people and trying to figure out what kind of personality they might have and how to capture that in a photo.

That’s my inspiration…have I scared you yet? I promise I don’t stare people down. Only the crazies at Walmart.;-)

Inspiration Week: Wall Displays

How many of you receive your photo disk and never have any prints? Mmmmhmmm, that’s what I thought!  I am hearing more and more that don’t ever get prints for their home!  Sometimes it is because you can’t figure out what photos and sizes, so here are some ideas.

Another reason I’ve heard is cost. I have competitive pricing on prints AND canvases!  YES! Canvases!

And my favorite favorite favorite is Organic Bloom which I also sell. They are gorgeous, unique frames!

These are all basic so here is a cell phone photo of some of my own photos in my house. Please ignore the random items you’ll see in the house. I’d like to blame it on the fact that we just moved….but we’ve been here for 4 months….oops!

Inspiration Week: WEDDINGS

Ok…so I am really horrible at keeping up with my blog, but I am going to attempt! This week will be all inspirational!  Today it is weddings. The wedding industry is incredible. There are so many creative and beautiful ideas, for example, this bouquet made of brooches. I wish I was that inventive!

There are also stunning blogs to take a look at. My current favorite is Style Me Pretty. http://www.stylemepretty.com.  ABSOLUTELY gorgeous weddings are posted on this site!

As a wedding photographer, I adore weddings like these where each detail is carefully thought out. The photo possibilities are endless! Another of my favorites to photo is a wedding that is scheduled at that special hour – late afternoon when the sun isn’t too high and harsh.  Then immediately following is the perfect time for formal shots of the bride and groom.

Bride and Groom shots are what I personally think are the most important. Frankly, those are the photos you will hang in your home, use as a Christmas card and admire for years after your special day. So I personally like to focus on these photos.

And finally, interest…when talking about “inspiration” I can’t forget Pinterest!   I pin as many beautiful ideas as I can. There are so many!  Take a look at my boards http://pinterest.com/rcbellphoto/wedding-inspiration/ and keep in touch!

Have a wonderful Monday! Tomorrow – MORE inspiration talk!
